Who We Are

Saint John’s Lutheran Church is a ministry of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and the Southeastern Pennsylvania Synod. We are a Reconciling in Christ congregation which means that we are publicly committed to full affirmation and welcome to LGBTQIA+ people including the full participation in worship, learning, serving, and leading in the church. We are also registered at www.gaychurch.org.

Our Welcome Statement

We at Saint John’s Lutheran Church welcome all who seek to follow Jesus wherever they are in their faith journey, regardless of race, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, nationality, ethnicity, marital status, physical or mental ability, family configuration, political affiliation, or economic circumstance.

We strive to follow Jesus’ command to love one another as he has loved us (John 13:34). Led by the Holy Spirit, we are committed to God’s liberating word to the world working for environmental stewardship, racial justice, and gender equity. All children of God are welcome to worship, learn, serve, and lead in this church. Jesus never turned anyone away from his table and we’re not about to start here.

Our History

For over 150 years, Saint John’s has served its community in the name of Jesus.  Originally established as Saint Johannis in 1867, our church formed from the faithfulness of God and the generosity of those founding members who mortgaged their homes and donated their wages so our church could form.

Our church, our neighborhood, and our world have changed a lot since 1867, but one thing remains the same- to Good News of Jesus. Saint John’s continues to gather to hear and learn about the promises of Christ’s kingdom where mercy and love reign above all else. Saint John’s continues to live out this love of Christ as we serve our neighbors in feeding the hungry, caring for children, providing comfort to the grieving, and advocating for justice in our communities.
